How to Build a Successful Tech Startup in South Africa
South Africa’s tech startup ecosystem is thriving. With over 33 000 startups – more than 2 000 of which have
Innovation City in Cape Town has announced the top 10 finalists for its Startup of the Year Competition. The finalists will pitch their startups at a live event on the 23rd of April 2024 in front of judges Catherine Young (Grindstone), Renier Kriel (Open Letter), Chipo Mushwana (Nedbank), and Roger Norton (OkHi Smart Addressing).
Launched in 2022, the competition has become a platform for breakout companies to evolve from hidden startups to household names. Each year, 10 high-growth startups are selected from across South Africa and invited to compete.
This year’s finalists operate in a range of tech sectors, from artificial intelligence (AI) to healthtech. The top 10 finalists are:
· Callibi Speech Analytics – Provides AI-powered transcription and analytics software for contact centres, trained specifically on South African languages and dialects.
· Botlhale AI – Offers tools that enable real-time transcription, call analysis, and multilingual support in African languages.
· Fynbos Inc – Presents an intuitive investment platform built for young professionals, providing access to top-tier funds with no platform or advisory fees.
· The LeaseSurance Agent – Replaces traditional security deposits with lease insurance through its data-driven platform.
· Jem HR – A WhatsApp-based HR and benefits platform built for deskless workers, empowering them with access to savings tools, fair finance, and educational resources.
· JobJack – Connects businesses with entry-level talent via an end-to-end digital hiring platform.
· Sudor – Empowers fitness and wellness creators to launch their own branded apps - complete with video, live streaming, chat, and payments, without writing a single line of code.
· Lawyered Up – An AI-powered contract lifecycle management platform that helps businesses automate legal workflows.
· Flood – Provides a fully engaged discovery and commercial platform designed for large audience owners such as telcos, challenger banks, and radio stations, enabling them to monetise and activate their communities more effectively.
· Sensify Africa – Has a Gatekeeper System that uses tamper-proof valves, RFID tech, and cloud software to eliminate cylinder theft and piracy.
The awards night for the competition will be held on the 24th of April 2025.
