Applications for the seed fund run by technology incubator Savant in partnership with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) are officially open. The fund is designed for early-stage innovators, university researchers and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Savant launched a venture fund in 2019 after receiving R110 million from the SME SA Funding, and has since invested in a number of companies.

The pre-seed fund targets projects that are in the early stages of technology development such as proof of concept studies, development of prototypes and conducting market research. It aims to ensure that innovators reach technical feasibility of their innovation currently at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 or 4 stage.

The allowed amount per application for the fund is R800 000 (including VAT), with a maximum period of 12-18 months.

The seed fund is open to applicants who have previously completed a pre-seed funding project and need funding to achieve a minimum viable product ready for market testing with clear regulatory pathway and route to market.

This grant is suitable for innovations within TRL5 and TRL6. The maximum allowable amount per application for this call is R1.2 million (including VAT), for a maximum period of 12 – 24 months.

Interested parties can apply for the fund by completing the online form.
